Wi-Fi kits made possible through federal COVID relief funds

The installation of the Wi-Fi kits on Sand Springs Public Schools’ buses, including the hardware and the software licenses, cost just more than $91,000, said Tina Moses, director of technology for the school district.

Ongoing costs, such as maintaining the data, will be minimal, she said.

The kits were paid for through the Federal Communications Commission’s Emergency Connectivity Fund, a $7.17 billion program authorized by Congress as part of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021.

The Emergency Connectivity Fund helps schools and libraries provide the tools and services their communities need for remote learning during the COVID-19 emergency period.

The ECF is providing relief to millions of students, school personnel and library patrons and is closing the so-called “homework gap” for students who lack Internet access or the devices they need to connect to classrooms.

For eligible schools and libraries, the ECF covers reasonable costs of laptop and tablet computers; Wi-Fi hotspots; modems; routers; and broadband connectivity purchases for off-campus use by students, school personnel and library patrons.

The FCC to date has committed more than $2.6 billion in program funding to school and library applicants.

The FCC is providing support for more than 6.1 million connected devices and nearly 2.9 million broadband connections to support 6,028 schools, 512 libraries and 49 consortia (regional or statewide groups of schools or libraries that apply together).

Households that are struggling to afford internet service during the COVID-19 pandemic may be eligible for a monthly service discount through the Emergency Broadband Benefit. Learn more here: fcc.gov/broadbandbenefit.
