Detailed maps explain home ignition zones and what actions in each zone will best protect structures from igniting.

The Firewise USA program will guide residents through the steps to protect homes and neighborhoods as well as their families’ safety.

Bans, watches, warnings

There are two types of burn bans in Oklahoma — county-issued and governor-issued.

A governor-proclaimed burn ban supersedes any county burn bans. Governor-issued burn bans may cover only groups of counties or all counties.

“Fire Weather Watch” and “Red Flag Warning” are terms used by forecasters to call attention to weather conditions that may result in extreme fire behavior.

Both are intended to make people aware of the conditions, and it is then the personal responsibility of the individual to take extra precautions.

During these periods, extreme caution is urged by all because a simple spark can cause a major wildfire.

A Fire Weather Watch is issued when weather conditions could exist in the next 12 to 72 hours that would promote fires.

A Red Flag Warning is issued for fire-inducing weather events that will occur within 24 hours.

A Fire Weather Watch may be issued prior to the Red Flag Warning.

The criteria for Red Flag events requires the combination of high to extreme fire danger and a critical fire weather pattern such as low relative humidity, very dry and unstable air, and very strong or shifting winds.
