Sand Springs City Council unanimously passes ordinance mandate for face coverings
Several communities in the area had already had passed a similar mandate and I thought the Sand Springs City Council would do the same. The city had experienced one of the most significant increases in COVID-19 cases around the Tulsa metro area since Halloween. But the prospect of a face covering mandate was unpopular as several residents voiced their concerns at both the monthly meeting at Nov. 16 and special meeting on Nov. 23 where the council approved the measure.

Threat of COVID-19 touches Rejoice basketball, Owasso athletic events
I began to realize the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Thursday, March 12. That morning I was scheduled to travel to Oklahoma City to cover the Class 2A basketball tournament. Within 30 minutes of leaving the office in Owasso, I get a call that the tournament has been postponed. All state tournaments were officially canceled a few weeks. It was the first time since 1918, the same year as the last pandemic experienced in the U.S., Oklahoma did not crown a state champion in basketball. That’s when I knew we were headed into uncharted territory.

Just prior to spring break, I was covering a tennis tournament and overheard a couple of coaches talking about how Oklahoma schools might extend the upcoming break a week or two due to concerns of the coronavirus. At the time, I thought such a move sounded wild. Little did I know that soon after spring sports would be called off all together.

Early economic impact of COVID-19 on small businesses in Owasso
I went around to small businesses in Owasso to get their perspective on the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic in late March. At that point, there was a lot of uncertainty as many business owners were forced to reduce their hours of operation. Some were forced to lay off employees.

Owasso holds Black Lives Matter protests
In early June, the Black Lives Matter-Tulsa chapter organized a mile-long protest along one of the busiest streets in Owasso in the wake of nationwide civil unrest following the death of George Floyd. Despite the growing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and a contentious rally in Tulsa a few days earlier, hundreds of people showed up for what was turned out to be a peaceful and seemingly productive protest.
